Airport Memories

My day of work could not have gone any slower this Monday, only hours before I picked up Ivan from the airport.

I got to the airport early and parked.
I had everything all planned- where i would stand, what i would wear, what restaurant we would go to afterwards.  I picked up Randy's Doughnuts of the way in case he wanted a snack and I got the perfect parking spot.  I was early and I got to watch some beautiful airport greetings, not as good as those videos of dogs seeing their owner after they come home from war, but pretty cute experiences that made some pretty nice memories for those couples and families.

When I saw Ivan, I waved at him, still in the tunnel. I waved high overhead and he waved back. We smiled so big.  Then he came through some doors and we hugged for a very long time.
It wasn't overly dramatic, but I cried a little.  We smiled and we were happy.

Seeing your partner after a long period of time away is a very interesting, incredible experience.
It's strange that you can forget someone's face. Even if they are you husband of five years and you've been skyping them everyday for the past two months.  That's two months of not actually see him, and you forget those little details.

Long distance has been an amazing journey that has taught us both to be so grateful and not take each other for granted.  Relationships get so frustrating. Then when you add in travel, finances, timing and human nature, it gets really frustrating.

On Tuesday, we were blessed with the perfect day.
We drove into LA to the Chinese Embassy to get our Visas.  We went to a park and chose a wonderful meal out of a wide selection of food trucks.  Then we went to the LA Colosseum, Museum of Natural History and the Science Center where we saw the Endeavor space shuttle. We stopped out by the lawn and laid in the sun for a bit, too. We went to our friends for a BBQ dinner and got home in time for some TV and relaxation.  It's so good to be together again.

Now off to our next adventure.

Diet Coke and Chocolate

Living on Diet Coke & Chocolate has been my mantra the last 3 months I spent in a long distance relationship with my husband, Ivan.

It is coming to an end this Monday when I pick him up from LAX and we head out on a cruise ship to Asia until mid-May, making up for lost time by sleeping in a small cabin with bunk beds, ya know, the usual.

My lonely person diet of soda and candy took a couple of strong tolls on me during the process, hopefully not increasing my chances of early diabetes seeing as it is, after all, a diet.

My first panic moment was early during the long distance, about the second week of January.  I was moving, alone, in New York, it was freezing and holy mother and biscuits did I need a diet coke- stat!
I walked into the Rite Aid after church (umm… yes, let's pause here another time..) and went straight to the back coolers for a cold bottle of Diet Coke.  You would have guessed it, they were out.  I thought I could settle with a can, I'd even buy 6, or 12 if I had to, but they were out of those too! They we even out of 2-liters!
I knew this couldn't be possible, this is Diet Coke we're talking about here! I asked a female clerk.  I think my words were somewhere along the lines of "I really need a Diet Coke, and I don't think you guys could be out of it, it's a fairly common purchase. I mean, you  wouldn't run out of cigarettes." Ok, I know, dramatic, but my reaction became even more theatrical when she looked around a proceeded to point me to the Caffeine free Diet Pepsi.  (Are you KIDDING me!!?!?!!?!?) I was livid.
And I never tried to buy Diet Coke after church again.

My second experience was at the end of January.
I was visiting Ivan while on tour, but I stayed in the hotel for the night while he did his show.  I was in the car all day, I was tired and had some seriously bad gas cramps. BAD.
For this and other reasons I needed a Diet Coke.  I called the Front Desk to ask where any vending machines were or if they sold any at the front desk. (Heaven forbid I actually get up and look myself!)
They only carried Pepsi products (that's a shocker) but there was a CVS down the street.  So I grabbed my purse and set out!  I've never been addicted to anything, but my 5 minute walk to and around the inside of that CVS was the closest thing I'll ever get feeling Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome. My heart was beating faster than I ever remember and my anxiety was racing.
(Where is the Soda aisle????) My head turned at every corner and the nervous sweats started sinking in.  Finally, I found it. Diet Coke 20oz bottles 2/$3. (Exhale)
I opened one immediately and roamed around the store for some dinner solution.  It was 7pm and my plans were with the hotel bathtub and TLC Wedding Fridays.  I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I chose  a box of Little Debbie Valentine cakes, and it's not the first time I bought them….this year….
So there I am, standing in line with 1 1/2 bottles of Diet Coke and my box of fat girl problems.
And remember when I said I had gas cramps? Well, the Diet Coke served as a pretty excellent trigger for knocking out those suckers.. and that line at CVS was pretty long….
Although Diet Coke was saving my life at this moment, it ruined the evening of the 4 guys who were standing behind me.
I could smell it from the back of the store!
What died?
Dude, that wasn't human!
It was a low point for me guys, a very low point.

For the next two months, Ivan kept touring and I had a mini fridge in my bedroom, stocked with cans of Diet Coke.  On top of the fridge was my chocolate stash. Everything was going perfectly.

And then we arrive at this afternoon.  A can of Diet Coke and chocolate came to my need at a time it was valued greatest.  I started my Saturday morning productive: packing, organizing, putting my expenditures into my excel spreadsheet, checking out my statements, and then I found it:
A letter from February 15, 2014 regarding a fee and new interest rate on my American Express.
I got on the phone.  I got the details, I started choking up, I asked more questions, I yelled at the representative and began sending texts to my husband.  I listened and texted.
I texted words in all caps.
Words like, FURIOUS, TWICE, FEES, LATE, and YOUR FAULT.
I was bawling.  I asked for a new representative.
She said she could waive the fees.  I'm bawling even more.
My dad comes in and I can't get out the words - Ivan paid our american express bill late, we got a fee, and interest, I'm so mad, cry, cry, blah, blah.
My mom hears and quickly leaves.  She comes back later and whispers something into my dad's ear.
At this point I'm laugh-crying.  Don't worry, this is typical of me. I'm embarrassed, I'm so upset, my dad is telling me it's not a big deal. There's no more fee, I apologize to my husband. I'm so mad, blah, blah, cry, cry.
Then my mom starts laughing and says, "Guess what? I just got on the phone with American Express because your father forgot to pay the bill on time and we got a fee too, but we got it waived."
More laugh-crying ensued and my emotional scale was thrown off for the rest of the day. Thank GOD for my mini fridge!
There I was, sitting on my bed, crying into a Lindor truffle.
It was so pathetic. I was pathetic.
I cried. I laughed. I cried some more and pressed the Diet Coke to my lips until the hyperventilating subsided and my emotional scale dropped down to a 3.

And now I sit here, 8pm on a Saturday, finishing another Diet Coke, texting my husband who forgave me minutes after the ALL CAPS anger-text fiasco, and everything is ALL RIGHT.

So remember Ladies, Husbands may leave you, but you will always have chocolate and Diet Coke!
(except at the Rite Aid on Woodside Ave and 61st Street, screw you guys.)

because two is better than one

Whether it's on his right or on his left, I NEED to be with Ivan again.  And folks, it's really happening.  This Monday.

Long Distance, is heart wrenching, patience building, communication challenging, HARD, and just a difficult and bad thing. Try, under all circumstances, not to do it.
It doesn't really make sense when you have to explain it to people.
Sometimes I feel proud. I'm lucky to be married to a talented, wanted guy.
Sometimes I feel embarrassed- every time an old lady friend points it out or asks why I'm alone.
(but who cares about their opinion anyway)
The point is- IT'S ALMOST OVER!!
And we'll never do it again!…until the next job comes around…

Ivan and I have been in love for 6 years.  I know I spent the 19 years before that preparing to be his wife and to love him as best as I could.  Long Distance has taught me to love my husband better, be more appreciative of life.  Be more patient.  Be more tolerant of life. Be accepting.  Be addicted to my iPhone. and hopefully, Be Happy.

In all our (over) six years together, here's our "long distance timeline," or time spent doing long distance, not including small trips:
February 22- March 21, 2008
April 26- June 19, 2008
July 12- August 31, 2008
April 2- May 17, 2012
June 4 - June 15, 2012
January 1- January 14, 2014
February 1, 2012- March 31, 2014

When I look at these dates spent apart, and then I scroll up to all those photos spent together, it doesn't seem that bad at all.

I know we could do it.

plugging along + photo journal

with only two weeks until REUNION PARTY TIME, I have become expert at keeping myself busy, getting ready fast, aggressive LA driving, taking care of dogs, and oh yeah, being totally awesome as a 6:30am earthquake un-phased me this morning! (My response: Oh cool! I'm basically Chuck Norris)

But the last few days, I have been gru-um-py!

Saturday night was the brink the the grump monster.
Poor Old Aunt Flow, unwelcomingly came back for another visit to lonely Melissa.
So you know I don't like being alone, but now I am alone, grumpy, starving all the time and none of my clothes fit….so i'm basically a total mess.
I don't know if its  a good thing or a bad thing that all i did in my free time last week was watch all 8 blurays of Harry Potter…

ok, i did a few other things.  But getting serious here, there are ups and downs in everyone's life.  Sometimes really exciting things are happening and other times you're just plugging along.
Right now is me, plugging along, and boy, does it feel long.

The minutes at work go by slowly.  I'm counting the days until Ivan comes home. I'm always tired.  I keep getting paper cuts at work.  Days are filled with things to do and the weeks keep plugging along.

I'm glad though.  I'm glad because in 3 more weeks, we'll be together and flying to Singapore and starting a really amazing adventure and the contrast of that excitement compared to these "plug along" weeks, will make the reward so much sweeter!

In the meantime, to make up for the lack of photos I've included in entries the last few weeks,

Writing in the middle of the night

Lately I have been busy.
Not with anything super important, but just busy.

I am grateful to be busy because the busier I am the less I think about missing him.
Lately I just haven't had much time to think.
Again, an advantage that I am not dwelling on loneliness but a disadvantage that I stay up too late and do all the thinking I missed out on during the day. Thinking, and compiling a blog idea in "Notes" on my iPhone at 1am and not being able to sleep..that kind of thinking.

I am only moderately tired.
I'm consuming less caffeine, less food, trying to work out more.
I'm working full time and helping with my church musical and am pretty much always either talking to a family member, coworker, my dogs, or anyone on the phone.

I am reliant on TALKING to people.  In fact, when I'm driving alone, or at home alone, I almost always reach for my phone and dial someone.  First Ivan, then a family member, then a friend.
And if no one picks up…..   I PANIC!!!!!!!

Really though, I have a desperate fear of being alone and having no one to talk to.  I go crazy.
Tuesday night while driving home from work, I found out my sister wasn't going to be home until 9pm and my parents weren't coming home at all and, (confession) I whimpered.
I have to be at home alone for 2 whole hours???
What will I do if I'm alone and I actually have to THINK!?!?

Seriously though, this sounds pathetic, but I am literally pushing myself along day by day and will only come out of my trance until March 31st when I pick up Ivan from the airport and I will be whole again.

Tonight is the one night of the week I have zero plans and no one to talk to.
Don't some people pay for this kind of freedom?
Aside from plugging along at my taxes a bit more and finishing this blog entry, my big plan for the night is to take a really long shower.

It's the little things!

happy to be.

Today I was utterly exhausted.

In addition to staying up late, Day Light Savings Spring Forward and driving my parents to the airport at 5:30AM this morning- I am beat!

As I was "driving" in LA traffic at 5pm tonight, I had the strange feeling of being happy and sad at the same time.

Partially for all the good/bad news received lately and partially for it being Sunday and realizing all the great blessing in my life.  I stand by my thoughts: be with the ones who love you; what blessings!

Some landmarks that bring upon today's feelings:
5 weeks since we saw each other last
(art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, i went the first week we were apart)

Ivan's on the east coast still touring..
He tours a total of 12 weeks Jan-March.  We will be apart
8 weeks, the longest during our marriage.

Days and Days of "Us, Being Happy."
Me: Still eating well, working Mon-Fri, Happy & lucky to be
with my family and have good friends to talk to.

Him: Still eating take-out every meal, roughly 6 shows a week,
Gyming nightly and making good friends on tour.

We are no strangers to long distance relationships.  Believe me, it's sad.  But the last 5 weeks of being apart have gratefully lacked the feeling of desperation that normally comes with being away.

I am sad.  But grateful to know he is coming soon, lucky to have him & proud!

I also want to say, that my feelings of peace and lack of desperation, come 100% from my knowledge of one true principle: Eternal Marriage.

by an apostle of the Mormon Church,
gives a clear explanation of what I'm saying.

The fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ brings great comfort in stressing times of mortality. It brings light where there is darkness and a calming influence where there is turmoil. It gives eternal hope where there is mortal despair. It is more than just beautiful doctrine. It is a reality in our lives that if we can be obedient and obtain the eternal rewards that God grants us, if we will draw nigh unto Him and embrace the eternal doctrine, we will be blessed.

This is why I am blessed!

Oscars, Chocolate & Texting

I love the Oscars.
One day, I will have a beautiful home where I can host a fantastic viewing party,
or even better, one day I can attend the Oscars.

This year, our night was calm, pleasant and fun.
I had a party of five, me, my sister, my Dad and our two dogs.
Ivan had a party of eight in a hotel room in Worchester, Mass after his show.

The party at home, consisted of a CONTEST that I totally dominated!
Our ballot had 22 categories and I guessed 11 right and won the Toblerone-Golden bar!

The runners-up (and myself) all enjoyed a slice of humble pie..
Ok, it was French Silk and it is seriously to die for, friends!
The book is called Chocolate Never Faileth and it has great advice and tried and true recipes.
I highly recommend it!

One unfortunate part about the weekend was that Ivan is having problems with his phone-
It drops calls, runs out of battery too quickly and it just too old to be reliable.
In a long distance relationship, my phone is LIFE!

Luckily Ivan has an iPad mini and with wifi being so available,
we can text more often than anything else.
Most of our texts are just sending unflattering selflies to each other..

We are half way through long distance.
I am so grateful for wifi, FaceTime, texting, relaxing Sundays and

xo,
Melissa

be with the ones who love you

My diet hit an all time low when I themed tonight's dinner around the leftover Velveeta
we had in the fridge.

The Mac & Cheese was delicious and everyone had seconds.
I used this recipe
except…. gulp… I ADDED 6 extra ounces of Velveeta!!
Who AM I????

Tonight is my 25th day without Ivan.  He is in North Carolina performing at a tiny haunted theatre doing Man of La Mancha and I have been in California with my family and working as an overachieving secretary by day.  All day long I was looking forward to the cheesiness!

Although I am on a day-counting basis with my long distance, I surprisingly have not been very tearful through out the weeks.  This streak took and unexpected end tonight when I sat down for the
dinner I had excitedly made for everyone.

I just started crying.

It was me, my little sister and my dad and I cried as I said I didn't feel good and wanted to go to my room.

My dad said the sweetest thing.
Alright, but you have to come here and hug me first.

It was so sweet, I didn't even get up, I just cried more and said, "I MISS IVAN!"
He replied,
We know.
But when you're sad, you shouldn't go to your room and be alone,
you need to be around people who love you.

Two months ago, in New York, I got Bed Bugs in my apartment.  I was in such despair and so overcome.  Why would this happen just as Ivan was leaving and I had to be alone?
I had the idea to go spend the length of Ivan's tour with my family in California rather than having to move by myself, or worse, be in an old, bug-ridden apartment.

I was alone in the apartment packing and cleaning and preparing to leave for only 2 weeks, but it felt like forever.  Sleeping on the couch, finishing off the cans of food, at the laundromat washing every item of clothing we had, everything was my personal hell.  I looked to the future and grew excited to spend the remainder of "my alone time" with my family in their home.

Today I feel so lucky and amazingly blessed to have this home to come back to and even more lucky for a sweet, caring family who loves me and takes care of me.
Especially when I am sad.

Everyone deserves to be around loving people.
Especially when you are sad.

Today I also want to say, that YOU have to be the person to allow those people into your life.  You can't hide out in your room, alone, feeling sorry for yourself.
Get out there and go find the people who love you!

Here I go,
M

Love and Long Distance Relationships

I think I pride myself as a woman who is pretty carefree and independent.  I love my husband but I try really hard not to be needy, obsessive or totally head over heels.
I am still not sure why that is something I try not to do.  It is unfortunate that subconsciously I guess I feel that being "in-love" makes me a weaker person and it's better to love my husband logically with my head than with my heart.  The truth is that I love him with both.  I will say, the longer we've been married, the more there is a logical reason for loving him, rather than the simple follow-your-heart type anecdote.  I love him and he means so much to me, but I definitely don't go gaga every time I see him.  Instead of the blissful run into each other's arms after a long day, it's more like, "Good, you're home, did you pick up the milk?"   But that's life right?  I get used to having him around, so I take my husband for granted a little.
It is, however, refreshing once in a while, to meet someone new and hear them say we look like newlyweds.
I need a little run-into-his arms love and bliss back in our relationship!  Rarely do I praise my husband for all the many things he needs to be praised for.  It's like showing him off at show and tell, or just a dedicated blog entry for a dedicated husband. So here it goes, because, in all honesty, he is pretty dang awesome!

I guess God knew I needed a little more "heart action" happening in my life, so He gave Ivan a job!
My husband is in the National Tour of Man of La Mancha.
He is talented and funny and charming and knows how to support me and keeping
working in the theater business!
He is on the road for three months tour-busing around the United States
performing his show almost everyday!
Which is why I have been traveling a lot more- in order to see him!

Our long distance is always a challenge.  It's filled with a constant half-empty feeling and my incredible inability to make decisions.  But somehow, we came up with an awesome plan that will have me visiting him often and living with my parents and keeping busy so the time would fly by!

Now for the hard part..
A few things had to happen before this became a reality.  All the while, I didn't blog about it because I was busy, but mainly just overwhelmed.  I had to pack up all our stuff, sell our furniture, put our things into a 25 square foot storage unit and move.
And I did it sans husband.
I hated it.
All of it.
I hated sleeping on the couch and then the air mattress and I hated being lonely and all of it.
I just kept thinking This will be over soon and I'll be with Ivan soon.

 Thanks to technology

Then, we called and texted and face timed and for a moment, everything was better

And So…                                                                                                                           The weeks passed and once we were reunited, everything magically went back to normal and        I began loving with my HEART and not my HEAD.It was real MAGIC!  I didn't take him for granted anymore.  I ran blissfully into his arms because I missed him so much and I remembered in my heart why I love him in the first place.

Absence makes the HEART grow fonder, people.
We only have to face-time for a few more weeks and then
we'll be back together again for more traveling and performing.

Ivan and I have always been in this constant state of SURVIVAL:
get smart
pay the bills
choose the right
better our career
stay happy
stay together

and most certainly not in that order.

I have survived with great love and blessings from God and the miraculous gift of MARRIAGE!  Someone is really watching out for us and especially today, I am so grateful to be part of                The Surviving Mormon Couple.
