Whatever Happened to the Welch's?

It is long past Christmas and long past my annual viewing of  It's A Wonderful Life, yet I still have one thing that just won't stop bugging me...

Whatever happened to Mr. and Mrs.Welch?
We first meet (the voice of) Mrs. Welch on Christmas Eve during the collapse of George Bailey's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.  He returns home from work, upsets his entire family and insults a school teacher, bringing her to tears.  Not typical of most movie heros, but hey, we sympathize with him because he was never able to fulfill his dreams of traveling the world on a cattle boat, and eat coconuts in Hawaii.

The dialogue of this scene makes me laugh/cry in a the most terrible/incredible way.
MARY
(worried) Oh George, What happened?

GEORGE
Everything's happened! You call this a happy
family? Why did we have to have all these kids?

PETE
Daddy, how do you spell "frankincense"?

GEORGE
shouts) I don't know how you--! Why don't you ask your mother?!

[Later on: PHONE RINGS ... MARY PICKS UP]

MARY
Oh, thank you, Mrs. Welch. I'm sure she'll be all right. The
doctor says that she ought to be out of bed in time to have her
Christmas dinner.

GEORGE
Is that Zuzu's teacher?

MARY (hand over receiver)
Yes.

GEORGE
Let me speak to her.

He snatches the phone from Mary.

GEORGE (cont'd)
(on phone)
Hello. Hello, Mrs. Welch? This is George Bailey. I'm Zuzu's
father. Say, what kind of a teacher are you anyway? What do you
mean sending her home like that, half-naked? Do you realize she'll
probably end up with pneumonia on account of you?

MARY (shocked)
George!

She puts a restraining hand on his arm. He shakes it off. She
cannot know that George's tirade against Mrs. Welch is really a
tirade against the world,
against life itself, against God. Over the phone we hear Mrs.
Welch's voice sputtering with protest.

GEORGE
Is this the sort of thing we pay taxes for –– to have teachers
like you? Silly, stupid, careless people who send our kids home
without any clothes on?
You know, maybe my kids aren't the best-dressed kids; maybe they
don't have any decent clothes . . .

The telephone is suddenly alive with a powerful male voice calling

MR. WELCH'S VOICE
Now, who do you think you are?

GEORGE
Hello? Who is this? Oh, Mr. Welch? Okay, that's fine,
Mr. Welch. Gives me a chance to tell you what I really think of
your wife.

MARY
George . . .

GEORGE (raving at her)
Will you get out and let me handle this?
(into phone –– shouting)
Hello? Hello? What? Oh, you will, huh? Okay, Mr. Welch, any time
you think you're man enough . . . Hello? Any . . .

The phone hangs up.  [SOUND: SLAMS PHONE DOWN]

PETE
Daddy, how do you spell "Hallelujah"?

GEORGE (shouts)
How should I know? What do you think I am, a dictionary?
Tommy, stop that! Stop it!
(screams) Janie, will you stop playing that lousy piano?! Stop it!

Piano stops. Janie starts crying.

Later on, George goes to his friend's bar, and likely the only bar in Bedford Falls, Martini's.  Mr. Welch happens to sit next to him, realizes who George is and seeks revenge by punching George in the mouth.

"And the next time you talk to my wife like that you'll get worse.
She cried for an hour. It isn't enough she slaves teaching your
stupid kids how
to read and write, and you have to bawl her out . . ."

He gets kicked out of Martini's with force and Martini vows to never let him in the bar again.

"He don't come in to my place no more."

So in a matter of hours, George Bailey ruins a couple's Christmas, making the wife bawl for an hour and reconsider her career choice and preventing the husband from ever entering the town's coolest and most-likely only bar.  Is that something a "hero" would do?  Come on George Bailey, we can do better than that!

I love the stage direction written in the screenplay: She cannot know that George's tirade against Mrs. Welch is really a tirade against the world, against life itself, against God.

But Mr. and Mrs. Welch didn't know that! They were just yelled at and publicly humiliated! How unfair!

But lucky George gets a Christmas Miracle, witnessing "what the world would be like without him."
He learns his lesson, makes up with his family, saves his job and Clarence gets his wings.
What a win for the Bailey family right?

But what is going to happen on ZuZu's Back-to-School night?
I didn't hear any apology George Bailey.  If someone yelled at me on Christmas Eve, and I had control over their daughter's grade?

Looks like little ZuZu is gettin' an F, Mr. B. Sorry, not sorry.

For a movie that's all about family, friends and second chances- Don't you think we'd get a little closure on that INSANE YELLING from the supposed "Most Loved Guy in Town"? Maybe a little apology?

Maybe a teacher who let a little girl go outside with her coat unbuttoned doesn't deserve an apology.
Maybe no one cares about the Welch's because Jimmy Stewart is so good-looking.
Maybe after the holidays, Mary scheduled a Parent-Teacher conference for just George and Mrs.Welch.  It seems like something Mary would do - Sweet, Loving, a little micro-managing but mainly sweet and loving.

Maybe the next night, Mr. and Mrs. Welch stood at the bridge and considered taking their own lives but an angel came down from heaven and showed them what the world would be like without them.
(It's A Wonderful Life II possibly...)

Anyway, I will apologize to Mrs. Welch on Mr. Bailey's behalf.  I didn't forget you! And give him a break, what do think he is, a dictionary?

Thank you Frank Capra II for making such a beautiful movie

Ice Skating in Bryant Park

It was a few weeks ago, it was Monday, it was snowing and we were both working all day.  Normally we would come home, eat, vedge out and go to sleep.
But we remembered we lived in the best city ever and it was almost Christmas, so- we just had to!
What a way to put you in the Christmas Spirit!

Christmas Came and Went

Why is it the day I spent all year looking forward to goes by faster than any day all year?! Boy, is Christmas amazing!  And Christmas in New York 2013 was no exception!  I almost didn't leave my house the entire two days!  I spent my "days off" on my feet cooking, baking and cleaning. I listened to Christmas music and watched movies and I worked and even wrapped a few last minute gifts for Mister Ivan.  Here is the run down of our Christmas...

Treats we made:
Sugar Cookies
Toffee
Fudge
Chocolate cookies with mint M&Ms

Treats we ate but didn't make:
Chocolate Oranges
Chocolate covered Joe-Joe's
Lindt Truffles

Savory Food:
We also had chips and dip, Apple Cider and with help from our friends we had a feast of ham, cheesy funeral potatoes, green bean casserole, stuffing, sweet yams and rolls.  We only ate as much as we could after all those sweets we dominated.  We topped it all off with some pound cake and apple crumb cheesecake.

The decorations were so beautiful and festive.  I was so grateful for the time ad means I had to get a decorated tree, table cloths, banners and a whole lot I junk food!

Movies we Watched:
(Call us lazy, but nothing brings back Christmas memories quite like the movies)
The Holiday
The Santa Clause
It's A Wonderful Life
Home Alone 1 & 2
(I only remember sitting down and watching 2, the others were just playing for Christmas filler)

The things we did:
Christmas Cookie Delivery- this year we picked 4 families that live within walking distance to us.
Christmas Trivia
Small gifts for our house guests-socks or candy
Skyped with our family for hours!!!(cumulative, I must have talked with my dad and mom for 5 hours, it's fun to have FaceTime just "on" while you're getting things done and going about your day.  I was making sugar cookies in the kitchen as my dad was making fudge and toffee in his kitchen in California.  It felt like we were really together!)

Things I gave:
This year I had to spend Christmas away from a lot of family, so I got amazon Prime!  I sent books, kitchen gadgets and movies to my family and I ordered some of my husbands presents online too-with free 2-day shipping!
I gave him movies
A wool blanket
Headphones
Moccasins
2 dress shirts from an Express sale
A tie from a Dolce and Gabanna sample sale
Vitamins, granola bars, candy and toothbrushes

Things I got:
Shoes
Tights
Socks
More tights
Headphones
A purse
A craft kit to make garlands
Apple TV

I was so happy on Christmas Day!
Rarely do Ivan and I get along perfectly on days when we are together the entire time- it was a Christmas miracle-perfect harmony in our home!
Things I am grateful for:
My husband
My family
My life
My friends
My Heavenly Father
My Savior
Music
Lovely things
A beautiful world
Peace

Things I know:
Jesus Christ was born over 2,000 years ago and He is our Savior
Life is easier with the knowledge of Jesus Christ
Life is easier with dear friends and sweet family
I am lucky to be me!

Merry Christmas to Everyone! May you all find peace and joy this season, celebrating our Savior's birth!

Ode to Ivan

No Holiday party is complete without the laughter and craziness brought to you by this friendly animal, my husband, Mr. Ivan Hoffman.
No amounts of toffee and fudge I make can compete!  This candid photo from Friday can't even do him justice- the holidays is a season for laughter!!

Merry almost Christmas!

Last night, in New York, it was an unbelievable 70 degrees! We went walking with two of our favorite people and saw the window displays at
Tiffany's & Bergdorf Goodman and we visited the tree in the Trump tower. Then we scooted back to Queens and walked Gantry State Park, in Long Island City, with a beautiful view of the East River.

The Saturday before Christmas

This year, we are doing Christmas just the two of us!
The stress, planning and worry has all been minimized & replaced with more and more shopping and constant trips to the Asian markets in my neighborhood- aka, dollar stores!

My banners are looking quite excellent and I planned out how I would arrange our table!
Doesn't it look lovely?

One thing to keep an eye on every year is getting an equal amount of Christmas Presents/value per person.  Much of the surprise of presents is ruined when ordering off of Amazon wish lists.  I have to be at home to receive any packages-(hassle) and when you touch them, feel them and wrap em up, you start to figure out which one of the 20 things it is you registered for.  I started to notice two days ago that I had a few more presents sent to me than Ivan did. So this morning, I got on amazon prime and ordered 2 nice things that he actually needs.  When you are commuting everyday and when the weather is constantly changing from harsh conditions, you need a lot more "stuff."  Growing up in California, I needed one variety of clothes: Clothes!  In New York I need: Cold Weather Clothes, Scarves and hats, Snowy weather clothes, boots, long underwear, tights, lightweight clothes for very hot and humid summers, and way more shoes than I've ever needed in my life because I walk around so much, my shoes get destroyed.
Growing up, my Dad joked: Alright, it's Halloween so from now on, anything you want or need is waiting until Christmas! Even if it's socks and underwear! haha!
But you know what?  There's so much too that AND it makes you appreciate "things" more when you get to unwrap them and receive them as a gift!  I really click with gift giving and it's something that really excites and fulfills me.  I love Christmas so very much!

Merry Christmas!

Put a Banner on it

Tis the Season to go to Michaels, get out your glue gun & make a beautiful banner to hang in the window!
Or highlight a series of photos on the wall!
Gold is great because it can stay all year long! Works great for a New Years party too!

Making your banner requires more than a fair share of cutting!  But put on a Christmas movie and the time will fly!
It took a while for me to choose which pattern I liked best.  Once I chose it, I had to switch to the left side of my brain and turn the banner around so I could glue the backs of them in the correct order.  If a brain fart is bad, my brain let out a big long one because I was sitting there clueless for a while!
This is the easiest way I can explain it: if you want your pattern to be gold, blue, green, red; and you are glueing them from behind, you have to turn them face down and position them: red, green, blue, gold.  I put one dab of hot glue in each flag's corner and immediately put the yarn down.  You can only put a few dabs of glue at a time or it will dry out before you have a chance to put the yarn on.  It dries immediately and then you can turn it around and your flag will be your desired colors: gold, blue, green, red.
I bought 4 glittery squares of paper from Michaels, and 4 8 1/2 x 11 sheets and I made 4 banners! All very big! It already makes my house feel festive and I did it all for $7!
$5-paper
$2-red yarn
What a fun, cheery addition to our apartment!

Tis the Season!

Preparations for my favorite holiday are being made in the Casa de Hoffman!
I made a Christmas card! Don't be offended if you didn't get one, I only printed off 10 and mailed them to family!  We will be doing Christmas "duet style" this year, just me and my husband!

I made this cute Gingerbread house on Wednesday night!

I went to an audition on Tuesday and several of my gal pals were there! We got a merry and bright photo by the studio's Christmas tree!

Instead of "trimming our tree" this year- I got a trim myself!
Or 5 inches!
It feels great! Only problem is, it's been averaging about 28 degrees, so I keep everything snuggled in my new favorite warm hat!

Check out more Christmas photos on Instagram!
Now, off to do more Christmas shopping, prepping and baking!
